Fiercely Reliable

Governments, NGO’s, news agencies, adventurers and enterprise organizations have relied on Inmarsat for decades. It is the network of choice for clear, reliable connectivity wherever you are on Earth.

What makes it so reliable?

Inmarsat’s use of geostationary satellites is the primary reason. These satellites do not move across the sky—from our perspective they are fixed in the same position in space. Because they do not move, each satellite can provide continuous connectivity within their coverage footprint on Earth.

How does this impact performance of the Oceana 400?

Like all satellite phones, the Oceana 400 relies on an uninterrupted “line-of-sight” link with the satellite so it can connect to the network and sustain a signal. Because Inmarsat’s satellites do not move, once this phone has a connection you will receive continuous, highly reliable satellite service from that location…assuming nothing comes between the satellite’s “line-of-sight” link with your phone. When this happens it’s called terrain masking, and can occur when mountains, tall buildings or other high terrain features block your satellite phone’s ability to “see” the satellite.

With this product, once you have a connection, and remain in that location, you will never experience dropped calls—you can make or receive a phone call at any time. The Oceana 400 is fiercely reliable.

Best Usage Locations

The OCeana 400 is an excellent product for satellite voice service, and the Inmarsat network provides excellent global coverage and reliability. However, understand that terrain masking is an issue that impacts all satellite networks. No system is perfect, and in areas with a high likelihood of terrain masking, some networks provide better chances for connectivity than others.

As a rule of thumb, the Inmarsat satellite is relatively low on the horizon when you are located North of 50° N latitude or South of 50° S latitude, which increases the chances of terrain masking problems. Between these latitudes, you’ll need about a 20° upward look angle towards the equatorial satellite belt, without any vertical obstructions, to have a clear line-of-sight to an Inmarsat satellite.

Our recommendations:

If you must rely on a satellite phone for high-priority communications at a fixed-location, such as a command or emergency operations centre, choose the Oceana 400—you’ll have great service and reliable coverage. If your area of operations has high terrain features, please contact us about renting one for short-term testing in your location.
