Globalstar Sat-Fi Overview

What it Does:

Using the Sat-Fi Satellite Hotspot and the free Sat-Fi App, you’ll have constant, reliable phone service and texting, light email, and slow-speed data connectivity available on any wireless device (not suitable for web-browsing). The Sat-Fi hotspot operates over iOS, Android, MAC OS and Windows.

How it Works:

To use the Globalstar Sat-Fi hotspot, you need to download the Sat-Fi App onto your iPhone/Android device. This is a free app available on the app store or on google play, and it acts as the primary user-interface for all the features that the Sat-Fi hotspot has to offer.

When you wireless pair your phone to the Sat-Fi you’ll receive a new, North America-based phone number to easily make and receive calls through the Sat-Fi app. Or, you can connect a laptop to the Internet via a slow-speed 9.5-kilobit-per-second connection. At this speed, it will take approximately 20 minutes to download a one-megabyte file over Sat-Fi. While this is completely unsuitable for web-browsing, it is adequate for downloading text-based weather reports and GRIB files.

Easy to Use:

Since Globalstar satellites orbit the earth, and the Sat-Fi’s external antennas are omni-directional, there’s no fuss about pointing the Sat-Fi in the correct direction. As long as there is a big sky overhead, you will enjoy clear voice connections.

As well, the maritime antenna can handle any weather, making it popular with boaters, fishers, and other maritime vessels.

How to Set-Up Your Globalstar Sat-Fi

Affordable Airtime

Globalstar’s satellite airtime plans boast extremely competitive pricing. With their new global satellite network (completed in 2016) they provide reliable service and crystal-clear audio quality. A Sat-Fi can be used on any Globalstar airtime plan, there are no special plans specifically tailored towards the Sat-Fi.

Monthly and Annual Globalstar Airtime Plans

When you buy your Globalstar satellite phone with an airtime plan, you will be charged for the one-time activation fee of the monthly or annual plan that you select, plus the price of the phone. Each month, you will receive an invoice from Globalstar for the monthly subscription cost of your plan, plus any billable airtime that you’ve consumed.

We offer monthly and annual airtime plans for all of our globalstar products. Both monthly and annual plans come with included airtime—once all included airtime is consumed, usage is billed on a per-minute basis. The subscription fees for monthly and annual plans are billed on a monthly basis—but included airtime can be consumed differently for each type of plan

What’s the Difference between Annual and Monthly Plans?

If both plan types are billed on a monthly basis, what’s the difference?

There are two main differences between Globalstar’s annual and monthly plans:

  1. An annual plan automatically renews on a 12 month contract year after year. A monthly plan has an initial term of 12 months and then automatically renews on month-to-month terms following the first year of service.
  2. Airtime minutes that are included with your monthly plan are valid on a month-to-month basis—if you don’t use them, you lose them! Airtime minutes that are included with your annual plan are valid for the entire year and can be consumed in any amount, at any point, throughout the year.

Why Choose an Annual Plan over a Monthly Plan?

Each monthly plan comes with a set amount of minutes per month—these minutes are not cumulative from month-to-month meaning that if you don’t use them, you lose them.

There will likely be some months when you do not use your Globalstar device, meaning you didn’t take advantage of the included airtime—which you’ve essentially paid for through the monthly fee of your plan.

On the other hand, there will likely be months when you use your Globalstar device quite often—potentially consuming more airtime than is included with your plan that month. This means you’ll have to pay additional per-minute charges on top of the monthly fee.

So, Annual plans are a good choice if:

You have seasonal requirements and will use up more airtime in certain months than in others. In these cases, an annual plan gives you more flexibility by providing a larger amount of included (“paid for”) minutes that can be consumed at one time.

Near Global Coverage

The Globalstar satellite network offers coverage across most of the northern hemisphere (not including the polar regions) and across South America and Australia. This coverage is not as comprehensive as that of other satellite networks, such as Iridium, but the audio quality is exceptional and the hardware is affordable and very easy to use.

globalstar coverage map

As you can see from the coverage map above, your Sat-Fi will work best in North American, parts of Souther America and large portion of Western Europe. You will experience a weaker signal and less reliability when travelling in the yellow zones. Your Sat-Fi will not work in Southern Seas, high Northern latitudes, most of Africa, most of Asian and most of the Middle East.

Great for Fixed and Mobile Applications:

Unlike other satellite hotspot options, the Globalstar Sat-Fi must be plugged into an external power source, such as a wall outlet or vehicle power—it does not have its own battery. As well, the Globalstar Sat-Fi requires an external antenna, which must be located under an open sky to communicate with one of the orbiting satellites.

Three product packages to Suit Your Needs—all the same price:

We offer three different packages for the basic Globalstar Sat-Fi hotspot, each one comes with a different antenna option to suit a specific application, and they are all the same price:

sat-fi with marine antenna for use on boats and ships

A Maritime Antenna
Best for marine applications when the Sat-Fi will be mounted in a boat.

sat-fi with magnetic puck antenna for vehicle mounting

A Magnetic Puck Antenna
A great option for vehicle-mounting and recommended for use in latitudes South of 50 degrees.

sat-fi with magnetic helix antenna for vehicle mounting

A Helix Antenna
Another magnetic antenna option, and recommended for use in latitudes North of 50 degrees.

Satellite Connectivity for Your Team:

The Globalstar Sat-Fi hotspot has a 100-foot range. And while up to eight phones may connect to the Sat-Fi, only one phone may be in use at any given time.

Why Should You Choose Sat-Fi?

the Globalstar Sat-Fi is a capable, easy to use product that will provide high-quality satellite voice communications through your smartphone. However, because this device requires an external power source, it’s most suitable for users in vehicles, boats, or fixed locations like cabins or office buildings.
