the best mobile satellite internet products for use with vehicles

Mobile satellite Internet products are used in cars, trucks and other vehicles to keep users connected while parked or on the move.

Typically, these mobile satellite products are hardwired into your vehicle’s power system, but there are a few options for temporary vehicular deployment as well. If you’d prefer a more portable solution and don’t need connectivity while moving, check out our portable satellite Internet page.

Get the full Internet experience no matter where you are:

To achieve the full Internet experience from a mobile satellite Internet connection you’ll need to subscribe to one of our high-speed satellite data services. We offer service options specific to land-based applications. All require compatible mobile satellite Internet equipment.

Mobile Satellite Internet Equipment

Get the best solution:

So far, we’ve only discussed what a mobile satellite internet service can do for you, but you’ll need some equipment in order to take advantage of this technology.

Comparing products to find the best solutions can time consuming, so we’re going to help you speed things up:

How to Choose a Mobile Satellite Internet Product

Start by researching which satellite data service fits your needs. Each of these services can only be accessed by a collection of specific, compatible equipment. There are more equipment options than service options—so first decide on a service, doing this will narrow down the equipment choices and dictate which ones you should examine further. The following steps will help you out:

Mobile Satellite Internet: Step 1 – Choose a Service

All of our high-speed satellite data services can be used for standard data applications (Internet browsing, emails), voice, SMS, fax, HD image transfers, standard or HD video-streaming, or a combination of these.

Chroma Satcom can transform your vehicle into a full-service mobile office with the connectivity you need to stay productive and safe. So first, decide which service meets your needs—our mobile satellite Internet services are broken down into two options:

Inmarsat BGAN Satellite Data Service

This service is best for individuals and small teams of people who need connectivity while on the move.

We offer BGAN satellite data services from Inmarsat, a global (except for the extreme polar regions) satellite network that features service options for land, marine and aviation users. The BGAN service is considered a high-speed satellite data service. For land-mobile applications it can be accessed through dome-style antennas of varying size, typically referred to as Mobile Satellite Internet Terminals.

What you’ll get from BGAN
Our BGAN service gives users the following capabilities:

  • Data speeds up to 464 kbps (varies by satellite Internet terminal being used).
  • Simultaneously browse the Internet, make a phone and send an email.
  • Communications on the move. Vehicular BGAN equipment will provide connectivity even while the vehicle is moving. Some BGAN terminals can even operate at vehicle speeds up to 200km/h. This is something that most VSAT-compatible equipment cannot do.

While our Inmarsat BGAN service offers slower bandwidth than a VSAT service option like Global Xpress, the equipment costs are typically much less—especially for mobile-specific equipment designed for vehicle mounting. You can still use this service for bandwidth-intensive operations like news broadcasting/video streaming, but you’ll require a class 1 mobile BGAN terminal such as the Explorer 727 or Hughes 9450.

Inmarsat Global Xpress VSAT Service

This service is best for bandwidth-intensive operations such as remote news broadcasting, or for sites in remote areas or disaster-struck regions where large teams of people need reliable connectivity.

The term “VSAT” stands for “very small aperture terminal.” This type of service is accessed through satellite dish-style antennas.

Global Xpress VSAT service plans are not specific to land or marine applications, but are used with land- or marine-specific equipment depending on your situation. VSAT services provide much faster data speeds than Inmarsat’s BGAN satellite data services because the antennas on VSAT-compatible equipment are much larger. When it comes to satellite data—the larger the antenna, the faster the data speeds.

While there are numerous satellite networks that provide VSAT service, not all of them offer global connectivity. That’s why Chroma Satcom has chosen to exclusively offer Global Xpress—it is a high-speed solution that relies on rapidly deployable, easy-to-use equipment that will work almost anywhere on Earth.

Inmarsat’s Global Xpress VSAT service is the first high-speed VSAT service to provide global coverage, and it is much faster than BGAN. For land-mobile applications it can be accessed through collapsible, auto-deployable, auto-seeking satellite-dish equipment that can be mounted to a vehicle roof. These are typically referred to as Auto-Deploy Dish Systems. While Global Xpress-compatible equipment is more costly than that for BGAN, the airtime usage charges are lower. Expensive equipment can be hard to justify at times, but the savings on operating costs can make a big difference for some customers.

Mobile Satellite Internet: STEP 2 – Choose Your Equipment

Finding the right product requires a bit of research. None of us enjoy sifting through websites with countless product options and specifications, so we want to help narrow down your options as quickly as possible. Once you’ve decided which service (BGAN or Global Xpress) will meet your mobile satellite connectivity needs, choosing the equipment becomes much easier.
